Indigo Trumpet

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.7 feet (51 cm) tall. Its indigo stems grow in bunches of 5 and are wispy with a curved tip, and the giant, gray-green leaves are circular with smooth edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the stem.

Two small flowers sit at the end of the stem. The flowers are 7 cm (2.8 inches) wide, with pale green petals that gradient shift to vibrant orange on the outer edge. The central disk is turquoise. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet made up of dozens of widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.

It has a strong scent that smells like pepper, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind.
