It takes 4 years for the gray-green stems to mature, by which point they can reach a diameter of 5 inches (13 cm) and are smooth and rubbery.

The wispy, soft leaves reach up to 1.4 feet (43 cm) in length. They are aquamarine and gold, and have irregular edges.

The entire plant is edible and the grains areextremely spicy.
