Indigo

This small fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 54 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, crooked trunk covered in delicate, smooth, yellow-brown bark, and inside, the very light wood is silver.

The sparse amount of branches trail down to the ground and are covered with thick bunches of large, 6 pointed leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are crimson at the bottom and intense yellow with amber patches at the top.

In early spring, it produces bunches of small, magenta blossoms with spear shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They detach easily and have a faint scent that smells like rotten eggs.

In early summer it produces very large, stiff, pointed fruit. The waxy lilac skin is tough and inedible, and the slightly crunchy indigo flesh is sweet and syrupy. The caramel seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
