The sparse amount of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with thick bunches of large, pleated leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are solid brown or lime, with blue patches.

In early spring, it produces dozens of giant, blood red blossoms with long, tapering petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a faint scent that smells like mint.

In mid-summer it produces , long, tapering fruit. The hairy magenta skin is tough and edible when boiled; it is sweet, and the slightly crunchy light blue flesh is sweet and very dry. The green seed is tiny and is in the centre of the fruit.
