Red Spine Cactus
Succulent type: Stem succulent (Stores water in its stem)This modest-sized cactus grows up to 26 feet (7.9 meters) tall. It splits partway up the body to form 6 finger-like stems. Each stem is gray-green, and is covered in large amounts of rigid grey spines. The wedge-shaped body is pink-red, and is dotted with small hazel spines.
It is fast growing, taking 8 months to reach maturity. Once mature, a single flower with each petal a slightly different shade of washed-out yellow grows at the top, reappearing once every 10 years. The flower head is shaped like a cup made up of 15 widely spaced, narrow petals. It has a soft scent that smells like something putrid.
The cactus's skin is thick, the turquoise flesh is waxy, and the blood red sap is thin.
