Indigofern

Shrub type: Coniferous (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 143 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous stocky, straight stems covered in thick, rough, pine-coloured bark, and the wood inside is pale brown.

The branches are short stubs with dozens of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of tiny, long, tapering, leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are azure on the edges and blue at the center, tough and clammy.

In late summer it produces thousands of medium-sized, indigo blossoms with finger-like petals. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like leather.

In early winter needle-like fruits ripen. The fuzzy slate skin is delicate and inedible, and the crunchy slate flesh is sweet and juicy. The gold seed is very large and sits at the end of the fruit.

It is suitable for creating strong, durable textiles
It absorbs an exceptionally large amount of water each day.
