Waterstem Pineapple
Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)This short fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 35 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.
It has a wide, slanted trunk covered in very thick, silky, white with black speckled bark, and inside, the very hard wood is yellow-brown.
The small bunches of branches are very short, thin and wispy and are covered with large amounts of giant, finger-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of moss green that gradient shifts to dark orange at the top.
In early spring, it produces dozens of small, light purple blossoms with sickle shaped petals. They are hardy and have an intensely strong scent that smells like pineapple.
In early winter it produces , oval fruit. The rough cyan skin is peel-able and sweet, and the crunchy purple flesh is sweet and savoury and syrupy. The lime seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.
The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.
Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with grassy ground between them.
It is very rare outside of a particular area.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
It grows well in the sun and full shade.
