Violetwood

Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized tree grows up to 12 meters (39.4 feet) tall and lives for centuries, with the oldest known specimen being around 553 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, straight trunk covered in thin, rough, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the very light wood is mahogany-coloured.

The branches trail down to the ground and are covered with small amounts of leathery, miniature, finger-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are violet at the bottom and slate with gold splotches at the top.

In late summer it forms large, bright purple aril (seeds with fleshy covers).

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
