Copperwood

Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This average-sized tree grows up to 24 meters (78.7 feet) tall and lives for centuries, with the oldest known specimen being around 273 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a long and flexible, slanted trunk covered in hard, waxy, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the very hard wood is burgundy.

The numerous branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with sparse amounts of clammy, giant, circular leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of moss green that gradient shifts to dark brown at the top.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of tiny, crimson blossoms with sickle shaped petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They fall easily and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like bonfire smoke.

In late summer it forms large, faded red, winged seeds that float and land far away.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
