Black Petal

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in its leaves)

This short flower grows up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. Its black stem is thin, and the tiny, dark brown leaves are umbrella-shaped with jagged edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Dozens of small flowers grow along the length of the stem. The flowers are 1 cm (0.4 inches) wide, with petals that are yellow in the center, subtle yellow in the middle and brown at the edges. The flower head is made up of 4 petals in raised layers. They are hardy.

It has an overpowering scent that smells like onion, and it has lots of pollen. It is a self-pollinator, but is also particularly attractive to bees.

It can survive a long time without water.

It only grows on the most fertile lands.
