Violetberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 57 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, twisting trunk covered in cracked, dark green bark, and inside, the light wood is pale brown-grey.

The small bunches of branches are very short and thin and are covered with small bunches of large, long, narrow leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are generally white.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of large, aquamarine blossoms with spear shaped petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have an intensely strong scent that smells like soap.

In late summer it produces tiny, asymmetrical fruit. The soft violet skin is delicate and edible when cooked; it is bitter and salty, and the slightly crunchy magenta flesh is salty and oily. The gold seeds are tiny and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with patches of undergrowth between them.
