Mahogany

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 48 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, twisting trunk covered in waxy, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the very dense wood is pale brown.

The abundance of branches are short, thin and wispy and are covered with thick bunches of miniature, heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of olive and gray-green that gradient shifts to caramel at the top.

In early spring, it produces many large, crimson blossoms with circular petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have an intensely strong scent that smells like warm cookies.

In mid-autumn it produces , oval fruit. The rubbery lilac skin is tough and edible when roasted; it is sour, and the crunchy azure flesh is extremely savoury and sticky. The light brown seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
