Greyberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 40 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 59 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, straight trunk covered in knobbly, brown and grey bark, and inside, the very hard wood is light brown.

The abundance of branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with large amounts of miniature, spear shaped leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are either peach or light grey, with yellow patches.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of large, black blossoms with sickle shaped petals. They are very delicate and have the faintest scent that smells like misty mornings.

In mid-summer it produces , long, narrow fruit. The leathery green skin is tough and edible when boiled; it is bitter, and the very soft violet flesh is overwhelmingly sour and very dry. The green seeds are large and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with clear space between them.

It can absorb up to 10 times its own weight in water.
