Knobbly Hazelberry

Fruit Tree type: Coniferous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 21 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a long and flexible, slanted trunk covered in hard, knobbly, yellow bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is pale brown.

The branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with copious amounts of huge, circular leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are hazel and red.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of large, yellow blossoms with 2 oval-shaped shaped petals. They are very delicate and have a strong scent that smells like rotten egg.

In mid-summer it produces tiny, oval fruit. The smooth lilac skin is stretchy and inedible, and the very soft cyan flesh is bitter and syrupy. The olive seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
