Burgundy Hazelnut Tree
Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 48 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.
It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in very thick, smooth, burgundy bark, and inside, the dense wood is silver.
The branches are short stubs and are covered with very large amounts of large, fan-like leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are solid black with hazel streaks.
In early spring, it produces thick bunches of tiny, purple blossoms with stiff, pointed petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a weak scent that smells like alcohol.
In early summer it produces large, broad, flat fruit. The fuzzy slate skin is thin and bland, and the soft magenta flesh is spicy and oily. The orange seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.
The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.
Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with patches of undergrowth between them.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
