Salty Bluefruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 40 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, angular trunk covered in delicate, cracked, white with black speckled bark, and inside, the very light wood is pine-coloured.

The tangled mess of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with sparse amounts of small, broad, flat leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are sky blue on the sides and pink at the center.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of giant, magenta blossoms with kidney-shaped shaped petals. They are very delicate and have an intense scent that smells like old shoes.

In late summer it produces tiny, triangular fruit. The rough gold skin is tough and spicy and salty, and the crunchy sky blue flesh is salty and very dry. The vibrant red seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with patches of undergrowth between them.
