Pink Spiked Lily

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its stem)

This small flower grows up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. Its olive or grey stem is very thin and splits into 9 branching stems at the base, and the giant, lime green leaves are long, narrow with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

6 to 12 giant flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 18 cm (7.1 inches) wide, with petals that are light brown on the edges and pink at the center. The flower head is shaped like a bowl with 39 raised, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.

It has a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like lemon, and it has an average amount of pollen. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by one species of insect in particular.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
