Desert Starflower

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 7 inches (18 cm) tall. Its grey and emerald stems grow in bunches of 4 and are thin with a curved tip, and the tiny, gray leaves are fan-like with tattered edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Two large flowers sit at the end of the stem. The flowers are 5 cm (2.0 inches) wide, with petals that are either grey or blue, with a yellow center. The flower head is made up of dozens of petals in raised layers. They fall easily.

It has a delicate scent that smells like a man, and it has very little pollen; it can cause allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.

It is bio-luminescent.
