This pink-red moss is commonly found growing in large clumps In marshes.
It is modest-sized, growing up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches, and is overwhelmingly light.
When mature, emerald triangular capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early autumn to release millions of spores; it can cause severe allergic reactions.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
Several parts of the grass have medicinal properties.
It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
