Copperberry

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This average-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for around 49 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has dozens of long and flexible, wonky stems covered in cracked, yellow-brown bark, and the wood inside is silver.

The branches are short, rigid and upright with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of tiny, wispy, leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are either copper, or cream with cyan dots, delicate and soft.

In late spring it produces dozens of medium-sized, amber blossoms with long, tapering petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like grass cuttings.

In early autumn stiff, pointed fruits ripen. The sticky cream skin is peel-able and edible when boiled; it is spicy and salty, and the soft cream flesh is salty and oily. The light brown seed is small and sits at the end of the fruit.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if cut.
