This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in medium-sized clumps In damp forests, In rainy mountain ranges, and On trees.
It is huge, growing up to 1.6 feet (48 cm) tall. It forms in small clumps, and is slightly delicate; it struggles more than most during dry spells.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release hundred of spores; it can cause allergic reactions.

It is difficult to cut through.
It is suitable for creating strong, durable textiles
A particular bird species likes to nest in it.
The sap is edible and very bitter.
