Crimson Petal

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) tall. Its red stem is very thick and straight, and the giant, red leaves are asymmetrical with smooth edges. The leaves alternate on the stem.

Each stem splits 1 to 5 times; a single small flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 22 cm (8.7 inches) wide, with solid vibrant yellow petals decorated with pastel purple dots and a crimson central disk. The flower head is largely flat with many widely spaced narrow petals. They detach easily.

It has a powerful scent that smells like soap, and it has a fair amount of pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also particularly attractive to butterflies.

It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
