Mahogany

This small fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 46 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a long and flexible, wonky trunk covered in paper-thin, wrinkled, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the very dense wood is black.

The branches trail down across the ground and are covered with copious amounts of huge, long, narrow leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are blood red and lilac.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of small, indigo blossoms with 8 cylindrical shaped petals. They are very delicate and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like a woman.

In late summer it produces , perforated fruit. The smooth purple skin is thin and inedible, and the soft blood red flesh is bitter and oily. The orange seed is large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with grassy ground between them.
