This gray moss is commonly found growing in large clumps In damp forests, and On trees.
It is short, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they are exceptionally hardy, and is very rigid.
When mature, emerald teardrop-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-autumn to release thousands of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
It is almost impossible to grow indoors.
