It takes 4 months for the yellow stems to mature, by which point they have tangled themselves into thick mats with a diameter of 2 cm (0.8 inches) and are rough and prickly.
The sickle shaped, soft leaves reach up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length. They are solid white with florescent blue splotches, and have irregular edges.
