Indigo Tree

Tree type: Deciduous (Sheds its leaves in winter)

This average-sized tree grows up to 12 meters (39.4 feet) tall and lives for centuries, with the oldest known specimen being around 527 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, cracked, brown bark, and inside, the flexible wood is black with white speckles.

The small handful of branches are short stubs and are covered with thick bunches of leathery, large, shield-shaped leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are solid peach or silver, with indigo patches.

In early spring, it produces many giant, turquoise blossoms with 3 pointed petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have the faintest scent that smells like mango.

In late summer it forms large, grey, spiky-shelled seeds.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between filled with undergrowth.

It can absorb up to 7 times its own weight in water.
