It has several sturdy, straight stems covered in thick, smooth, brown-green bark, and the wood inside is yellow.

The branches are long and thick with thousands of twigs that and are covered with very large amounts of huge, pleated, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in purple and violet varieties, light and covered in fine hairs.

In early spring it produces a handful of giant, blood red blossoms with 7 cylindrical shaped petals. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like grass cuttings.
