Copperberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This large fruit tree grows up to 23 feet (7.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 34 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a very thick, straight trunk covered in hard, ridged, brown and grey bark, and inside, the very hard wood is copper-coloured.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with small bunches of miniature, 4 pointed leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are solid blue with white zig-zags.

In early spring, it produces lots of tiny, bold green blossoms with sickle shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like candle wax.

In early autumn it produces small, needle-like fruit. The fuzzy amber skin is thick and inedible, and the very soft ashy purple flesh is savoury and dry. The beige seeds are small and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
