It is modest-sized, growing up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps, and is overwhelmingly frail.
When mature, emerald flame-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-autumn to release hundred of spores; it does not cause any allergic reactions.
Ivy often grows along the trunk.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
