Blue Agave

Succulent type: Leaf succulent (Stores water in its leaves)

This large leaf succulent grows up to 102 feet (31.1 meters) tall. The spear shaped stem is red, and is dotted with small yellow spines. The ripped-edged, long, narrow leaves are generally blue. Sparse amounts of them grow from the base like a cabbage. The leaves are sturdy, and are very difficult to pull away.

It is very slow growing, taking 30 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a single flower with petals that are cream on the edges and turquoise at the center grows at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is shaped like a tube made up of many widely spaced, narrow petals. It has a mildly strong scent that smells like pepper.

The leaf succulent's skin is rock-hard, the hazel flesh is smooth, and the brown sap is thin.

It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.

It is almost impossible to grow indoors.
