Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its leaves)This small flower grows up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. Its brown stem is wispy, and the giant, orange-yellow leaves are pleated with irregular edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.
Several large flowers grow in a bunch at the end of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with petals that are either blood red or cream, with a yellow center. The flower head is made up of 8 petals in raised layers. They are very delicate.
It has an intensely strong scent that smells like mint, and it has a modest amount of pollen. It is pollinated by the wind.
It is almost impossible to grow indoors.
