Slatecup

This small flower grows up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. Its yellow-green stems grow in bunches of 8 and are very thick with a curved tip, and the small, gray-green leaves are long, narrow with smooth edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the stem.

Each stem splits 3 to 6 times; a single small flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 4 cm (1.6 inches) wide, with petals that are purple on the underside and slate on the top. The flower head is shaped like a cup made up of several widely spaced, narrow petals. They detach easily.

It has a mildly strong scent that smells like meat, and it has a modest amount of pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
