This red moss is commonly found growing in giant clumps On rotten logs, In damp forests, and In moorlands.
It is small, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches, and is very frail.
When mature, emerald teardrop-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-summer to release dozens of spores.

Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
It has impressive regenerative properties.
All of it is said to be part of one single, massive plant.
