This burgundy moss is commonly found blanketing giant areas In heathlands.
It is big, growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they spread and grow quickly, and is overwhelmingly tough; it can easily endure flooding and draughts.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early summer to release millions of spores; it does not cause any allergic reactions.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
