Caramel

This small fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 52 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a branched, straight trunk covered in very thick, wrinkled, dark green bark, and inside, the very hard wood is copper-coloured.

The small bunches of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with large amounts of miniature, thin leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are solid caramel or blue, with violet splotches.

In early spring, it produces bunches of small, aquamarine blossoms with stiff, pointed petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a powerful scent that smells like fish.

In late summer it produces , perforated fruit. The soft beige skin is stretchy and edible when cooked; it is sweet, and the crunchy bright green flesh is bitter and salty and juicy. The grey seeds are small and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with clear space between them.
