Orange Starburst

This modest-sized flower grows up to 9 inches (23 cm) tall. Its green stem is very thick, and the giant, red leaves are 7 pointed with tattered edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from the base up to about halfway.

Two tiny flowers sit at the end of the stem. The flowers are 27 cm (10.6 inches) wide, with intense orange petals and a white central disk. The flower head is shaped like a star with 57 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They are hardy.

It has an overpowering scent that smells like varnish, and it has copious amounts of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by a small species of bird.
