It takes 17 years for the moss green stems to mature, by which point they have often fused together into ropes with a diameter of 2.0 feet (61 cm) and are thick and twisted.
The sickle shaped, clammy leaves reach up to 2.3 feet (71 cm) in length. They are gray-green with pink tips, and have ripped edges.
