It takes 22 months for the pink-red stems to mature, by which point they have often fused together into ropes with a diameter of 2 inches (5 cm) and are hard and brittle.
The perforated, smooth leaves reach up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. They are solid blood red or yellow, with crimson edges, and have irregular edges.
During late spring, the bine produces large amounts of small orange flowers, and during the late summer, after flowering, it produces lots of large seed pods.
It coexists peacefully with other plants.
