Flower type: Biennial (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)This small flower grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. Its moss green and orange-yellow stem is thin and splits into 8 branching stems at the base, and the giant, green leaves are light gray-green on the underside and are slender, pointed with rounded edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.
Several large flowers grow in bunches along the stem. The flowers are 15 cm (5.9 inches) wide, with alternating petals of intense red and dark blue, with a dark blue central disk. The flower head is shaped like a heart with 26 widely spaced, narrow petals. They detach easily.
It has a delicate scent that smells like cigarette smoke, and it has copious amounts of pollen. It is pollinated by insects and is particularly attractive to butterflies.
