Bluewood

This short fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 40 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 74 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a branched, curved trunk covered in knobbly, brown-green bark, and inside, the very dense wood is mahogany-coloured.

The small clumps of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with small bunches of large, perforated leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either orange, or blue with slate lines.

In early spring, it produces handfuls of medium-sized, blood red blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a tube-like floral cup. They detach easily and have a weak scent that smells like old books.

In mid-summer it produces tiny, cuboid fruit. The rough white skin is tough and sweet and sour, and the soft blue flesh is salty and very juicy. The light grey seeds are tiny and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
