Crimson Spine Succulent

Succulent type: Leaf succulent (Stores water in its leaves)

This short leaf succulent grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall. The narrow stem is sky blue or green, and is covered in thick sheets of flexible crimson spines. The thick leaves are either pastel orange, or magenta with cyan zig-zags. Large amounts of them grow on stumpy, red branches that are long, thin and wispy. The leaves are rigid, but are very difficult to pull away.

It is slow growing, taking 42 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with petals that are white at the sides and dark grey at the center, grow at the top, reappearing once every 3 years. The flower head is shaped like a sphere with 15 tightly layered, narrow petals. It has a fairly strong scent that smells like roses.

The leaf succulent's skin is thin, the aquamarine flesh is rough, and the lilac sap is thin.

It can flourish even in standing water.
It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
