Indigo

This short fruit tree grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 57 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, wavy trunk covered in very thick, rough, light brown bark, and inside, the very dense wood is pine-coloured.

The branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with thick bunches of small, slender, pointed leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of gray that gradient shifts to indigo at the top.

In early spring, it produces a handful of small, orange blossoms with cylindrical petals with a tube-like floral cup. They fall easily and have a weak scent that smells like mint.

In late autumn it produces small, stiff, pointed fruit. The rough blue skin is thick and edible when cooked; it is sour, and the very soft red flesh is sweet and dry. The slate seeds are small and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
