Blackberry

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for around 45 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has several long and flexible, angular stems covered in thick, smooth, black with white speckled bark, and the wood inside is brown.

The branches are very long and thick that and are covered with handfuls of miniature, oblong, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in purple and subtle purple varieties, frail and covered in fine hairs.

It produces many medium-sized, olive flowers with long, tapering petals. They fall easily and have the faintest scent that smells like petrol. In early autumn it forms smallwhite, shelled seeds.

It is suitable for use as a construction material
It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
