Indigoberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small fruit tree grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 41 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, crooked trunk covered in thick, silky, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the flexible wood is black with white speckles.

The tangled mess of branches are very long and slender and are covered with small bunches of giant, finger-like leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are emerald with indigo tips.

In early spring, it produces many large, azure blossoms with perforated petals. They are hardy and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like paint.

In late summer it produces , circular fruit. The smooth bright yellow skin is stretchy and sour, and the soft black flesh is bitter and syrupy. The olive seeds are small and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with clear space between them.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if it falls or if its limbs are knocked off.
It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
