Crimson Tide Flower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its red stem is wispy, and the small, red leaves are sickle shaped with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Each stem splits 6 to 8 times; a single medium-sized flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with solid blood red petals decorated with yellow lines and a silver central disk. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 56 petals. They are very delicate.

It has a soft scent that smells like an ocean breeze, and it has lots of pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects and is particularly attractive to a specific species.
