Crimson Spikefern

Shrub type: Coniferous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for around 15 years. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has numerous wide, wonky stems covered in hard, knobbly, dark green bark, and the wood inside is pale yellow.

The branches are very long and thick with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of small, fan-like, leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are solid red with amber patches, flimsy and soft.

It produces several medium-sized, bronze flowers with circular petals. They fall easily and have a powerful scent that smells like onion. In late spring it forms gianthazel, shelled seeds.

The trunk and branches are covered in large spikes.
It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
It is often home to a particular bird species.
