Magenta

Shrub type: Coniferous (Evergreen - keeps its leaves all year round)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 199 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has several branched, wonky stems covered in cracked, brown and grey bark, and the wood inside is yellow.

The branches are short, rigid and upright with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with small bunches of small, slender, pointed, leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are solid magenta or slate, with gentle purple splotches, light and rough.

In late summer it produces large amounts of small, purple blossoms with needle-like petals. They are very delicate and have an intensely strong scent that smells like old shoes.

In mid-autumn needle-like fruits ripen. The sticky azure skin is tough and inedible, and the slightly crunchy crimson flesh is sweet and sour and juicy. The yellow seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.

It is suitable for making strong rope
It is almost impossible to grow from cuttings.
