It has several knobbly, crooked stems covered in thin, silky, burgundy and brown bark, and the wood inside is silver.
The branches are short, rigid and upright that and are covered with small amounts of tiny, very thick, leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are white and olive, light and leathery.
It produces many small, red flowers with wide petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a powerful scent that smells like blood. In midwinter it forms medium-sizedlight brown, spiky-shelled seeds.
