This gray moss is commonly found growing in giant clumps In moorlands, and On rotten logs.
It is large, growing up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they are exceptionally hardy, and is extremely frail; it takes a lot of damage when trodden on.
When mature, emerald oblong capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-summer to release dozens of spores.
