Burgundy Starflower

This large flower grows up to 5.3 feet (1.6 meters) tall. Its burgundy stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 3 and are very thick and straight, and split into dozens of branching stems three quarters of the way up, and the large, amber leaves are spear shaped with smooth edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.

Two large flowers sit at the end of the stem. The flowers are 41 cm (16.1 inches) wide, with each petal a slightly different shade of orange. The flower head is shaped like a star with 56 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like cigarette smoke, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
